CLEVELAND _ The Carolina Panthers had taken a seven-point lead with less than three minutes remaining, yet, the warning signs were popping up everywhere.
"There was some celebration on the sideline," quarterback Rodney Peete. "I had to remind everybody we've been in this situation before."
This time was different. A team that routinely and painfully has squandered fourth-quarter leads finally held on to one.
With a stellar performance from a defense that forced five turnovers, the Panthers defeated the Cleveland Browns 13-6 Sunday in front of 72,718 at Cleveland Browns Stadium.
The victory snapped an eight-game losing streak and, at least temporarily, brought some good news to a team that has been bombarded with off-field problems in recent weeks.
"That's a huge gorilla off our back, not even a monkey," said coach John Fox, whose team won for the first time since Sept. 22 at Minnesota.
It didn't come without a scare that the gorilla, monkey _ or whatever you choose to call the string of fourth-quarter collapses _ would make another appearance.
