PHILADELPHIA _ Last week, Dikembe Mutombo related his struggles this season with the New Jersey Nets to those of an elevator rapidly dropping floor-by-floor.

"You feel that loss of gravity and you ask, `What happened?' " the 7-foot-2 center said. "Is it power or a mechanical problem?"

In the Nets' case, is Mutombo a mechanical problem that has caused the defending Eastern Conference champions to lose their balance?

Just two months into the season, the Nets are questioning their logic in acquiring the 36-year-old Mutombo from the 76ers last summer for forward Keith Van Horn and center Todd MacCulloch.

Meanwhile, the streaking Sixers quietly are gloating that they and not, as most observers seemed to feel, the Nets got the better end of the deal.
