It seems churlish to take the role of French-language snob when so many French people would derive such pleasure from the job--but when will the folks at Hyperion ever learn? A British company, Hyperion resolutely prefers English singers, no matter the repertory, and the current collection of songs, part of "The Hyperion French Song Edition," is yet another album that minutely explores the songs of a text-obsessed composer and employs not a single native speaker among the performers. The results are authoritative--but only until somebody produces a collection with native speakers.
It must be said that French singers are not exactly lining up to record Chabrier's melodies, and quel dommage! The songs are appealing--meatier and less atmospheric than those of Debussy or Hahn--and pianist Graham Johnson (the Rhodesian-born performer around whom Hyperion constructs many recital albums) plays them with vigorous ...
