Aug. 30--More staff, more equipment and more experience add up to more efficiency at the Lancaster Unemployment Compensation Service Center.
As the state Department of Labor & Industry facility holds its grand opening today, a department spokesman said the 60 W. Walnut St. center has come a long way since its debut in December.
"The efficiency of the unemployment compensation center in Lancaster has been raised remarkably over the past few months due to more workers and more equipment," said spokesman John Currie.
The $1 million service center takes initial and continuing unemployment compensation claims filed via telephone by residents of a 10-county region in southcentral Pennsylvania.
When it began operating in December with 75 employees, numerous residents complained that they couldn't get through, despite sometimes calling repeatedly for days.
The facility at that time lacked the technology to determine how many callers were encountering busy signals.
