RAMALLAH, West Bank _ As Israel united in grief to bury slain ultra-nationalist Rehavam Zeevi on Thursday, at least six Palestinians and one Israeli
were killed in a resurgence of violence that also threatened U.S. hopes for a Mideast truce.
In Bethlehem, a Palestinian militant and two suspected accomplices were killed in a car-bomb explosion that the Palestinians blamed on Israel. Soon after, Palestinian gunmen opened fire on the southern edge of Jerusalem for the first time in almost two months.
Running battles were fought between Israeli soldiers and Palestinian gunmen after Israeli tanks occupied parts of the West Bank cities of Bethlehem, Ramallah, Jenin and Nablus. Three Palestinians were killed, including a 12-year-old girl struck down in a Jenin classroom.
