Regarding the Aug. 19 letter from Gene Tinelli, M.D., "Misuse of terms clouds stem-cell debate":
While I applaud your effort to clear up the definition of blastocyst and embryo, you seem to have no idea what is involved in the development of a human. Consulting any textbook on the scientific study of embryology will confirm that "The development of a human being begins with fertilization, a process by which a sperm from a male u***nites with an ovum from a female." ("The Developing Human: Clinically Oriented Embryology," Third Edition; Keith L. Moore)
There are many stages of development for humans: from conception to embryo, fetus, baby, child, teen, adult and elderly. All of these stages are defined by what has developed and where the little human is residing. These terms can apply to any animal, but we are concerned with human development.
If it's "just a blastocyst," why not use dogs or cats? Because we need human stem cells. And face it - you can only get human stem cells from a human.
