Thousands of athletes and spectators from Long Island to Plattsburgh to Buffalo will arrive in the Mohawk Valley this week to take part in the nation's oldest and largest state athletic competition.
The 24th Empire State Games will be held Wednesday through Sunday at college and high school athletic facilities in Madison, Oneida and Herkimer counties. Officials expect 15,000 to 20,000 athletes, coaches and spectators.
For Madison County alone, that translates into a $1.5 million economic impact.
Motorists may already have noticed the "ESG" signs along state and county highways pointing to venue sites. Soon, they'll also see packed parking lots at hotels and restaurants.
Larry Goodsight, executive director of Madison County Tourism, said his office has averaged about 40 calls a day from people seeking hotel rooms or bed-and-breakfast accommodations. Its Web site gets 20 to 30 hits daily.
On any given night, there may be up to 20 rooms available out of Madison County's 600 rooms, Goodsight said, "but nobody wants to come for just one night."
