Oct. 15--Las Animas, Fowler and Aguilar school districts must pass bond issues in Nov. 6 elections to qualify for state matching funds to replace antiquated school buildings.
Las Animas Superintendent John Dombaugh said his district is going for a $2.5 million bond issue to match a $2.25 million state grant and build a new school to replace 85-year-old Columbian Elementary School.
"We have put quite a bit of money into the school, which was built in 1916. We're trying to keep the place up, but the walls and foundation are cracking and the electrical and heating systems are out of date," Dombaugh said.
