Oct. 25--WASHINGTON--There is now a winner of the $200 billion winner-take-all joint strike fighter sweepstakes. It's just that no one is saying who it is.
But the betting is still heavily on Lockheed Martin's side.
Yesterday, the Defense Acquisition Board, a high-level panel, made its choice in the "down select" between versions built by Lockheed Martin and Boeing.
Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld was briefed in the afternoon on the recommendation, which is officially being made by Secretary of the Air Force James Roche. President Bush will be informed before the choice is announced publicly.
