Nov. 7--BellSouth Corp. wrapped up seven days of hearings with the N.C. Utilities Commission yesterday, ending a crucial step in the local telephone giant's plea to enter the long-distance market in North Carolina.

This is the second time in three years BellSouth has filed a petition with the commission to offer long-distance service.

To begin this type of service, BellSouth has to prove it has allowed other phone companies to offer local telephone service.
