Clinical laboratory companies have begun to offer a wide option of self-selected medical tests to consumers.
The largest such company is Quest Diagnostics, whose QuestDirect service is currently available in Colorado, Montana, Missouri, and Utah. Market research indicated that there was major interest in patient-initiated testing in this area, said Gary Samuels, vice president for external communications at Quest Diagnostics of Teterboro, N.J.
HealthcheckUSA.com and CompleteBloodwork.com offer similar services.
At the QuestDirect Web site (www.questest.com), consumers can select from a panel of "general wellness" tests as well as screens for allergies, diabetes, heart risk, prostate-specific antigen, liver health, thyroid health, and osteoporosis. Tests can be ordered for sexually transmitted diseases, hepatitis C, and HIV. The prices of individual tests range from about $20 to $150.
Consumers preregister for their tests online, then have the tests performed at one of QuestDirect's retail stores or a Quest Diagnostics patient service center. Walk-ins are also accepted at both the retail stores and service centers, Mr. Samuels said. When their results ...
