Black cohosh, a popular herbal product, was no more effective than placebo in relieving most menopausal symptoms in women with a history of breast cancer, Dr. Judith S. Jacobson of Columbia University, New York, and her associates reported.
In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 85 such women, the overall number of hot flashes declined by an average of 27% after 2 months of treatment, but there was no significant difference in improvement between the black cohosh and placebo groups.
