Jan. 11--LAKELAND, Fla. -- A $30 million loss to last year's hurricanes sent the Mosaic Co. toward an inauspicious debut with an after-tax loss of $15.5 million in its initial quarterly report.

Mosaic, formed in October with the assets of the former IMC Global Inc. and Cargill Crop Nutrition, took another $30 million loss in merger-related expenses, according to the company's recently released financial report.

The report covered the quarter that ended Nov. 30, the company's second quarter. However, the second quarter figures cover only 39 days of operations for …
