Jan. 4--SCAD'S BACK, BUSINESS OWNERS ARE SMILING: We've noted the transformation before, but it's still sort of astonishing the way downtown changes when Savannah College of Art and Design comes back into session after the long winter break. (Because of the quirks of the quarter system, the college finishes before Thanksgiving and just started up again this week.)

These last few warm days have seen Forsyth Park crawling with kids, and the added pedestrian traffic on downtown streets creates a sense of warmth and safety.

It's like a real neighborhood.

And, of course, the sudden …
