Jan. 5--When longtime Amarillo employee Emmett Autrey finishes his career with the city today, he won't ride off into the sunset.

He'll be walking into it.

The city's outgoing water production superintendent plans to spend five months this spring and summer hiking past the sunsets, sunrises, mountains and lakes along the Pacific Crest Trail in California.

Since 1992, he has hiked 900 miles of the 2,650-mile trail that stretches from Mexico to Canada. His goal is to hike the entire length of the trail. After retiring, he'll be able to knock out greater …
