SCOTTSDALE, ARIZ. - A new nomogram for catheter-free maximal urinary flow rates appears to be extremely valuable in detecting female bladder outlet obstruction after surgery for incontinence, Dr. Steven P. Petrou said at a urogynecology conference sponsored by the Mayo Clinic Scottsdale.
Although no urodynamic test can absolutely confirm the obstruction diagnosis, the nomogram for catheter-free maximal urinary flow rates/maximum detrusor pressures is still a valuable test, said Dr. Petrou of the Mayo Clinic Jacksonville (Fla.).
Developed by urologists at Cornell University in New York in the past year, the nomogram was based on a comparison of data from 50 women with bladder outlet obstruction and 50 age-matched unobstructed controls.
If a patient's maximal free urinary flow rate is paired with her maximal detrusor pressure during voiding, she can be classified as having mild, moderate, or severe obstruction or no obstruction (Neurourol. Urodyn. 19[5]:553-64, 2000).
Dr. Petrou said he has photocopied the nomogram and keeps it in his office to use in assessing the values of his patients' tests.
