Hormone replacement therapy does not appear to increase the risk of breast cancer recurrence or mortality from the disease among breast cancer survivors, Dr. Ellen S. O'Meara of the University of Washington, Seattle, and associates said.
In a case-control study involving 869 women with a history of breast cancer, the 174 women who used hormone replacement therapy (HRT) had a 50% decrease in their risk of breast cancer recurrence and a 66% decrease in mortality from the disease, compared with nonusers after about 4 years (J. Natl. Cancer Inst. 93[10]:754-61, 2001).
It is not clear if these findings reflect a direct benefit of HRT, because "the actions of estrogen in established breast cancer appear to be complex and are poorly understood," the investigators said.
The investigators conducted a record-based study of women diagnosed with invasive carcinoma of the breast from 1977 through 1994. Each HRT user was matched with four nonusers of similar age and cancer stage at the time of diagnosis. The women were followed for about four ...
