BMD levels will rise with weight gain.
TORONTO -- Oral contraceptives do little to prevent bone loss in adolescent girls with anorexia nervosa, results of a recent study indicate.
In a study of 50 adolescent girls with low bone mineral density (BMD) and anorexia, there were no significant differences in BMD at the lumbar spine or femoral neck after 1 year in those who received oral contraceptives, compared with those who did not, Dr. Neville Golden said at the annual meeting of the North American Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology.
And in those followed for 2-3 years, about one-third increased their BMD while two-thirds lost further bone. These percentages did. not differ by treatment group, said Dr. Golden, director of the Eating Disorders Center at Schneider Children's Hospital in New Hyde Park, N.Y.
"In general, those who gained more weight increased their BMD. The greatest gain was in a patient who gained weight to normal levels and resumed spontaneous menses, he said.
