Byline: Jay Heater
SAN DIEGO _ Going into the second half of the Holiday Bowl at Qualcomm Stadium on Thursday night, Texas Tech's offensive linemen were spread across the field like a string of grocery clerks at Safeway.
Red Raiders coach Mike Leach seemed to be teasing Cal's defenders, offering aisles to run through that would lead straight to quarterback Sonny Cumbie. He was inviting Cal defensive coordinator Bob Gregory to blitz his linebackers.
No waiting on Aisle 5.
Gregory decided to oblige, and Cal linebacker Joe Maningo ran unimpeded to bag Cumbie on Texas Tech's first possession of the second half. It seemed as if once again Gregory had made the proper adjustments at halftime.
Then, on the next play, Cumbie hit wide receiver Joel Filani as he ran a deep post past cornerback Daymeion Hughes. Filani took the ball in stride and scooted 60 yards for one of the Red Raiders' three second-half touchdowns as they went on to a 45-31 romp.
As they did on so many occasions, the Red Raiders sealed those gaps in the line just before Cal's blitzers could arrive. They had out-schemed one of the best schemers in the Pac-10.
