BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. _ Former Texas coach Darrell Royal has a message for the naysayers who object that a Big 12 team will play in the Rose Bowl:
"I just hope they get over it. Because we're damn happy to be here."
Royal holds the Longhorns' all-time record with 167 victories and won 184 in his college career, the last in 1976. When he coached, only teams from the Big Ten and Pacific-10 played in the Rose Bowl.
But Texas jumped ahead of Pac-10 team California in the final Bowl Championship Series standings to earn the Rose Bowl berth. California's 45-31 loss Thursday to Texas Tech in the Holiday Bowl probably helped many get past the disappointment of the snub.
Making their first Rose Bowl appearance, the Longhorns will face Michigan on Saturday.
Texas coach Mack Brown said people in Southern California were more than welcoming to his team.
