MADISON, Wis. _ Ray Nixon was such a nervous wreck that he couldn't bear to look.

He'd taken the American College Test four or five times without getting the desired results and was so fearful of more disappointment that he had the results of his latest exam sent to his high school coach. It was crunch time in his push to meet the NCAA's freshman eligibility requirements, and the Whitefish Bay, Wis., Dominican star was staring at the equivalent of an 0-2 count.

Then one day in July after Nixon's senior year, the phone rang. Dominican coach Paul Wollersheim was on the line.

"Ray, you got it," he said.

It was the second chance Nixon hoped for.

Not every student comes in a ready-made package for college success. The 6-foot-8 forward from Milwaukee didn't fit the mold, but 2{ years later he has developed into a solid student and basketball player at the University of Wisconsin. It turns out all he needed was the opportunity.
