KANSAS CITY, Mo. _ Sometime during Sunday's game in San Diego, perhaps even in the first half, Trent Green will leave another entry in the Chiefs' record book.
Green needs 131 passing yards and 11 completions to become the Chiefs' all-time season leader. Bill Kenney currently holds both records _ 4,348 yards and 346 completions.
Just as when Kenney set them in 1983, there will be little celebrating. The 7-8 Chiefs are not headed to the playoffs, the same as Kenney's 6-10 team 21 years ago.
"In the long run, they'll stand for something," Green said. "When you look at the big picture and the history of this organization and the offensive players they had come through here, it means a lot. In terms of this season, it would be a lot better if we were getting ready for the playoffs than having those records."
Still, the records would be another step for Green in his attempt at becoming the Chiefs' first long-term fixture at quarterback since Len Dawson retired in 1975. Green, finishing his fourth season, already holds club records for consecutive starts, passer rating, highest completion percentage and 300-yard passing games.
At this rate, some of Dawson's Chiefs records like career yards _ he had 28,507, Green has 15,730 _ won't be safe. Even now, it may be prudent to think of Green's time with the Chiefs in some different terms.
