ORLANDO, Fla. _ Just as Saturday's Capital One Bowl reached the end of its singular story line _ Nick Saban coaching his final game at LSU _ along came Matt Roth.
Iowans must be wondering whether football players are required to take public speaking. Or whether Florida's drinking water finally got to Roth.
After three weeks of respectful tete-a-tete between No. 11 Iowa and No. 12 LSU, mostly surrounding Saban's imminent departure for the Miami Dolphins, Roth took matters in a new direction.
Speaking as one of five captains at Thursday night's Hawkeye Huddle at the Orange County Convention Center, Roth told Iowa fans he had but two words for LSU. The All-Big Ten defensive end held up two middle fingers.
He wasn't alluding to Iowa's ranking.
"I'm not considering capital punishment," Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz said, no pun intended.
