JACKSONVILLE, Fla. _ Several times this week Bobby Bowden has expressed his sincere hope that senior quarterback Chris Rix will be able to make the most of his final college football game. But once you get past all the wishful thinking, it's clear that the Florida State head coach is beginning to focus on next season.
"I haven't seen anybody playing for a national championship yet that didn't play great at quarterback," Bowden said. "You've got to play great at quarterback, and we've had too much back and forth, back and forth. It's not a good sign."
"Back and forth" translates to 15 losses over four seasons _ far from being the championship-caliber football program to which Bowden had been accustomed.
The message to Rix should be clear. The only thing he's being promised Saturday is the right to take the first snap. How the rest of the day goes, and how much he plays, will be up to him.
Let's face it, if Rix has proven anything these past four years, it's the fact that anything is possible. He's gone 27-11 in his starting assignments _ and 28 of his 51 turnovers have come in the 11 losses. He's thrown 62 touchdown passes with 38 interceptions.
Redshirt sophomore Wyatt Sexton, who started seven games this season, will be waiting to take over if Rix does falter against West Virginia this afternoon.
