SAN DIEGO _ Maybe the wrong team is in the Rose Bowl after all. Maybe it should be Texas Tech.
The Red Raiders certainly looked more worthy of a BCS bowl than No. 4 California in a 45-31 upset of the Bears on Thursday in the Pacific Life Holiday Bowl.
No. 23 Tech, with quarterback Sonny Cumbie passing for 520 yards and three touchdowns, overwhelmed Cal with offense and opportunistic defense.
Cumbie was 39-of-60 and set a Holiday Bowl record for pass attempts. The Red Raiders (8-4) scored touchdowns in every quarter despite playing in front of a pro-California crowd of 63,711 at Qualcomm Stadium.
Jarrett Hicks caught two touchdown passes, and Taurean Henderson ran for two more. Joel Filani's 60-yard touchdown catch gave Tech a 31-14 lead on the first possession of the second half.
Cal (10-2) was bumped out of the Rose Bowl at the end of the regular season when the BCS computers and a few media and coaches ranked Texas ahead of the Bears. The resulting controversy contributed to the Associated Press withdrawing its poll from the BCS rankings formula.
