JACKSONVILLE, Fla. _ One of these days the playmaker inside of Willie Reid is going to take center stage at Florida State. It could even happen during Saturday's Gator Bowl.
"Hopefully so," Reid said. "That would be a good way to end the season."
It would be an even better way to begin the new year. The Seminoles, after all, need all the help they can get on offense _ and the sooner the better.
Bobby Bowden has been anticipating Reid's arrival as an impact player for several seasons now, but when it comes to the junior with the blazing speed, the FSU head coach has spent more time reading dismal injury reports than glowing stat sheets.
"Willie is one of the best players we've got - I feel that way," Bowden said. "But he's had injuries. From about the second game of the season, he's had a (right hamstring) pull that has slowed him down. I bet he hasn't been at over 70 percent in a game yet."
The right hamstring pull was just half of Reid's problems this season. There was also a strain of his left groin. But despite the pain, Reid still managed to break Deion Sanders' single-season record for punt-return yardage with 514.
