LAS VEGAS _ Dee Brown's variety show was an enormous hit for the Illini on Friday.
Not even three minutes into top-ranked Illinois' rematch with No. 22 Cincinnati, the Illini's brash confidence was on display when Brown intercepted a Bearcats' inbounds pass and sank a layup despite getting fouled.
Brown's play had the crowd, aglow in Illinois orange, and his teammates crazed. Teammates Luther Head and Deron Williams came running down the court to congratulate Brown after his basket, bumping him in the chest with forearms.
Illinois players were "getting hyper," Williams said.
"It's a lot of emotion," Brown added. "You remember plays like that."
Illinois (14-0) was positively psyched in its 67-45 thrashing of Cincinnati (11-1) in the Las Vegas Holiday Classic at Valley High School. The victory gave Illinois a 4-0 record in the tournament and the championship over Cincinnati, which went 3-1.
