SAN JOSE, Calif. _ Tonight the Silicon Valley Bowl. Next, the Mid-American Conference championship.
That's the paraphrased message, the challenge and the "carrot" Northern Illinois coach Joe Novak offered Thursday night to his Huskies and the college football world. It came after NIU's rain-soaked 34-21 victory over Troy in the Huskies' first bowl game in 21 years that ended in the wee hours of Friday morning.
Novak was pleased and proud, but not surprised, that underclassmen tailbacks Garrett Wolfe and A.J. Harris led a comeback from a 14-0 deficit.
Now, he's looking ahead to next season's opener at Michigan and to another shot at Toledo and other MAC rivals.
For the first time in school history, Northern has had five straight winning seasons_6-5, 6-5, 8-4, 10-2 and 9-3. But NIU failed to beat Toledo over that span. And despite sharing MAC West titles in 2001-02-04, Novak's teams have yet to win an outright MAC title.
"We have that carrot to put in front of the guys coming back," Novak said. "It's always nice when you can have a carrot in front of them."
