The chorus wails its fear as Otello's ship battles the storm, wondering whether their hero will sink or sail. At the same moment, similar thoughts run through the Metropolitan Opera House audience concerning the singer about to essay the role. As the maritime danger onstage melts away into the purring harmony of "E salvo!" a large, rather unprepossessing man lumbers out. He takes a breath, opens his mouth and pours out a stream of bright, clarion tone. The voice is placed high, and the hurdles of Verdi's treacherous "Esultate!" are managed with ease. There really is a new Otello.
