Dec. 23--German suitor Werner Seifert offered the London Stock Exchange a Christmas truce as part of a charm offensive for his takeover plan.

The Deutsche Borse chief executive's truce -- which will continue until early January -- recalls the Christmas Day football game between British and German troops during World War I.

When Seifert's announcement was revealed to City advisers, they cheered and applauded.

Paris-based Euronext, which has begun its own talks with the LSE, also appears content to play a long game. Any bid would need clearance on competition grounds by the Office …
