CHICAGO _ Confused by the news that the pain reliever Celebrex might increase the risk of heart attack, 67-year-old Sharon Panick went to her doctor Monday to see if she should keep taking the pills that she says are a small mercy in her daily life.

Unfortunately, all her rheumatoid arthritis specialist at the University of Chicago could give Panick was a well-educated form of "I don't know."

"He didn't tell me yes or no," said Panick, a Chicagoan who has no obvious risk factors that would amplify any danger from the drug. "He said it was up to me."

It's a dilemma shared by millions of Celebrex users trying to decipher the mixed messages from government regulators and Celebrex maker Pfizer Inc. None of the specialists or family physicians interviewed Monday were confident they knew what to tell their patients.
