When we first reported Sony's release of its consumer HDV camera in the October issue of AVVMMP, we promised to keep you posted on all developments of a professional-version model. We can now say that Sony is indeed announcing the HVR-ZIU professional HDV camera, expected to ship this February for less than $5,000. To accompany the camera, Sony is also offering the HVR-M10U HD VTR (only available for the professional model). It, too, is expected to ship in February, and will list for less than $4,000. (Exact pricing of both models was not yet available when this issue went to print).

The HVR-ZIU, like the HDR-FX1 consumer model, is a 1080i, 3-CCD camera. Also, like the FX1, the ZIU offers a 14-bit A/D converter, a 12 X 32.5 mm to 390 mm optical zoom, and a 3.5-inch Swivel Screen hybrid LCD offering 250,000 pixels and records onto a standard DV tape. (The company recommends its new DigitalMaster cassette for optimal performance in HDV applications.) Where the consumer model ends, though, the professional model picks up. According to Bob Ott, vice president of marketing, professional audio/video products for Sony, "The HVR-ZIU offers more than 45 features that are in addition to the existing features on the consumer unit."

At the top of the new feature set for the HVR-ZIU is the ability to capture HDV, DVCAM and DV images at 60i, 50i, 30, 25 or 24 frames per second, in either SD or HD. This switchable 60/50 capability allows videographers to use just one camcorder for various applications.
