In a quiet month in terms of share price movement, London Clubs International led the gains, adding just under 20% as investors looked to add the stock to their portfolio ahead of interim results, due on 25 November, which are expected to impress.

Also on the up were LA Fitness, rising about 6% on positive reaction to its weight-loss centre plans, and Parkdean, which gained 10% and was widely praised for its timely and well-priced purchase of five new sites from Bourne Leisure. Additionally, good reaction to results announcements lifted Caffe Nero, up 3%, and Luminar, which added 6%.

On the downside, Reflex Group slipped after announcing it was to change its name to Healthy Living Centres and that non-executive director, Joe Walsh had stepped down from the Board. Whitbread fell about 4% as the group's business review looked likely to lead to a number of disposals, and Top Ten failed to impress the market with its results, and shed 2%.
