CHICAGO _ Despite years of public denial, New York Yankees slugger Jason Giambi reportedly testified before a grand jury that he has used banned steroids and Human Growth Hormone to enhance his performance.
The revelation about the American League's Most Valuable Player in 2000 comes at a time when negotiators for Major League Baseball and its players union appear to be closing in on a tougher policy for steroid testing and sterner penalties for users.
A highly placed management source says the sides are "very close" to having a deal to increase the frequency of testing, including tests during the off-season, and broadening the list of banned substances to follow the World Anti-Doping Association standards. Disciplinary measures also would be strengthened.
Human Growth Hormone, which Giambi said he injected into his stomach, would be banned if MLB follows WADA's Olympics standards. Also banned would be amphetamines and steroid precursors, such as dhea.
