SAN FRANCISCO -- Patients with primary cutaneous melanoma who have positive sentinel lymph nodes have a notably adverse prognosis, compared with patients who have negative sentinel nodes.
The pattern of recurrence in these patients shows that they are more likely to experience a distant recurrence of melanoma than a local one, Dr. Jeffrey E. Gershenwald reported at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
Nevertheless, the majority of patients with positive sentinel lymph nodes will remain disease free, said Dr. Gershenwald, a surgical oncologist at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
