NEW ORLEANS -- Food allergy is a serious concern for natural rubber latex--sensitized individuals, Kim Elizabeth Mudd, R.N., reported at a poster session at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology.
People who are sensitized to natural rubber latex (NRL) "should be evaluated for food allergy and need to be prepared for the possibility of serious food reactions," said Ms. Mudd of the University of Maryland, Baltimore.
In a study of 2,616 health care workers to determine the prevalence of self-reported food allergy at the University of Maryland Medical System, a positive NRL-specific IgE serology was detected in 7%, with 22.4% of this group reporting allergic symptoms following NRL exposure, almost always to powdered gloves, she said.
