WASHINGTON -- Five distinct dermatoborrelioses were seen in children with Lyme disease in an endemic area of Austria, Dr. C.M. Rudolph reported in a poster session at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology.
"Dermatologic manifestations may often be the sole presenting sign of Lyme borreliosis in childhood," said Dr. Rudolph of Karl-Franzens-University of Graz (Austria).
The cutaneous manifestations seen in a retrospective study of 103 patients aged 1-15 years were erythema migrans (48 patients), disseminated erythema migrans (29 patients), borrelial lymphocytoma (19 patients), combined borrelial lymphocytoma and erythema migrans (6 patients), and acrodermatitis chronica atrophicans (1 patient).
The median incubation period following a tick bite was shortest in patients with erythema migrans, at 7 days, and longest in those with combined lymphocytom and erythema migrans, at 100 days.
