MONTREAL -- Ocular rosacea often goes unrecognized and untreated because its symptoms--dry eyes, discharge, foreign-body sensation, redness, and frequent sty formation--are pretty mundane, Dr. Guy Webster said at the Atlantic Dermatological Conference.
Many patients don't realize there is a problem. A patient may experience dry eyes but attribute it to contact-lens irritation or something similar. Others may form sties and not be aware of them, said Dr. Webster of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Philadelphia.
The physical findings of ocular rosacea can be subtle. They include hyperemia of the lid margins and conjunctiva, sties, and chalazia. Corneal ulcers may also be present.
