WASHINGTON _ NAACP President Kweisi Mfume stepped down unexpectedly Tuesday as the head of the nation's oldest civil rights organization.
Mfume took over the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People nearly nine years ago at a time of ballooning debt, scandal and declining membership. He all but eliminated the debt and substantially restored the group's image after its former president, the Rev. Benjamin Chavis, used $332,400 in NAACP funds to avert a sexual harassment lawsuit.
