It's Hero Week on DVD, beginning with "Spider-Man 2" (4 stars, Columbia-TriStar, $29.96), a comic book adaptation in the tradition of "Superman II" and "X2," which is to say it's an improvement in just about every way over its predecessor. Directed with as much heart as style by Sam Raimi, it's thick with amazing special effects _ including the multi-tentacled villain Doc Ock _ but it's all in the service of an emotionally involving story about a young man (Tobey Maguire) who is forced to choose between the people he loves and his crime-fighting destiny.
Both the wide-screen and full-screen versions include two discs, and they are packed with extras, including a commentary by Raimi, Maguire and the producers, as well as programming focused on the technical aspects of the film. The four so-called Web-isodes _ shorts originally seen on the Internet _ have been collected. A 12-part documentary takes you through the film's making, and "Spidey Sense" factoids pop up on screen to impart trivia, should you desire it.
