ST. LOUIS _There is no sympathy for the well-to-do, not with the making-ends-meet to do or the essentially-tapped-out to do.

That said, these have been especially dour times for the Laurie family. If you can put aside the dollar signs, if you can resist the opportunity to take a gratuitous shot _ which is asking a lot for some of us _ you have to feel for Bill and Nancy Laurie.

Among other things, the Lauries own the Savvis Center, which is currently celebrating its 10th anniversary downtown without its first and foremost tenant. Last weekend would have been a big holiday weekend hockey-wise. The Blues were to play host to the detestable Detroit Red Wings on Saturday night, the first scheduled meeting between the two rivals.

The Lauries might have been entertaining friends ...
