It's a Zeffirelli production and it's the Roman Arena in Verona that means it's big and handsome and (the listless tempos of Alain Lombard aside) full of activity. In this 2003 performance, there is so much going on at every card table in old Seville, so many capes a-twirl at the Lillas Pastia party, such a gorgeous blue glow on the Alpine Act III, that it's surprising the cameras find time to notice the plot in the foreground. Indeed, one could probably achieve the effect of this DVD by playing a recording of Carmen while watching three TV sets at once, each tuned to a different station--so long as they were busy stations.
This is a pity for the sake of handsome Marina Domashenko, whose deep, dark mezzo sounds very Gypsy ...
