Allied Business Intelligence (ABI) of Oyster Bay, NY, is telling clients that DG contribution to the grid may hit 200,000 megawatts (MW) as early as 2011 worldwide compared with 65,000 MW today. ABI sees wind as the dominant (65%) generator in DG while small gas turbines get 22% and fuel cells 6%.
ABI calls its report "Growth Projections for Fuel Cells, Photovoltaics, Wind Turbines, Reciprocating Engines, and Small Gas Turbines." Meanwhile ABI expects the world gas market to grow at 2.4% over the next five years.
The growth forecasts overshadow the ABI's analysis of the 2003 market, which saw most fuel cell and microturbine companies ship fewer units than expected. Wind turbine and photovoltaic companies, on the other hand, experienced extraordinary sales and are expected to grow market share even further, says ABI Research.
