Mar. 23--Children and adults who take antidepressants should be monitored for suicidal behavior, and pharmaceutical companies should provide patients with warnings about the drugs, the federal Food and Drug Administration said Monday.
The move is the most direct indication yet that anti-depressants, while helping millions of people, could also have potentially dangerous side effects. The drugs are one of the most commonly prescribed medications in the United States.
The FDA made its recommendations while studies are being conducted to determine what role, if any, antidepressants may play in provoking suicidal behavior.
While worried patients began calling doctors Monday, mental health experts warned that severely depressed patients should not stop taking medications precipitously. Untreated depression can be devastating and more risky than taking the drugs, they said.
"It is wonderful that people are looking at these medications under a magnifying glass," said Louis Kraus, head of child psychiatry at Rush University Medical Center.
