Time plays require umpires to be especially alert

THE RED SOX VS. A'S GAME AT Fenway Park last May 11 ended on a rather bizarre note.

Here is what happened.

Boston had Trot Nixon on third, Carl Everett on second and Manny Ramirez on first with one out in the bottom of the ninth, trailing the A's 7-6. Troy O'Leary flied to medium left center. Mario Valdez, the left fielder, caught the ball and threw to third, where shortstop Miguel Tejada tagged out Everett, trying to advance, before Nixon crossed the plate.

Because Everett was tagged out before Nixon reached the plate, the game ended with a 7-6 A's victory. This is a classic example of ...
