EARLIER IN THE SEASON WHEN BARRY BONDS WENT ON A TEAR HITTING HOME runs, there was considerable speculation among fans and credential-bearing members of the media that the Giants' left fielder was headed for a record-breaking year in the longball category.
With 39 homers through July 1, talk abounded that Bonds would exceed Mark McGwire's record of 70 by season's end. One bedazzled writer even commented he was on a pace to hit 81 dingers. Good grief!
It took McGwire himself, however, to render the proper perspective on what even then had to described as rather risky guesswork.
