In the July "Fans Speak Out" section, a letter writer asked, "Who holds the record for hitting a home run on Opening Day for the most consecutive seasons?"
You gave the following answer: "(Scott) Rolen (of the Phillies) matched a record held by Willie Mays and Ken Griffey, Jr. in hitting an Opening Day home run in three consecutive seasons. We have found no player who hit Opening Day homers in four consecutive seasons."
According to the Baseball Quarterly Reviews, however, three different players hit Opening Day home run in four consecutive seasons.
Yogi Berra of the Yankees did it in 1955, 1956, 1957 and 1958.
Gary Carter of the Expos tied Berra's record with Opening Day dingers in 1977, 1978, 1979 and 1980.
And, Todd Hundley of the Mets added his name to the list with season-starting clouts in 1994, 1995, 1996 and 1997.
Curiously, each of these players achieved the record as a catcher.
