Mar. 31--Calling the field of assisted reproduction "relatively unmonitored and unregulated," the President's Council on Bioethics is recommending federal scrutiny of the test-tube baby industry.
In a report to be released Thursday, the panel suggests long-term, federally-funded studies on the health and development of children conceived outside the womb. It also recommends following the health of the mothers.
The government also should require the reporting of success rates and adverse side effects, the panel said.
Recent studies have documented an increased rate of rare birth defects in children conceived by in-vitro fertilization. The studies were conducted outside the U.S., however, because collection of such data is not required here.
Long-term effects of the procedure are virtually unstudied, despite an estimated 1.2 million IVF births worldwide within the last 25 years.
