SAN DIEGO -- Both spinal and epidural anesthesia appear to increase the chance of success with external version in patients after a previous attempt has failed.
Only 50% of 77 external versions were successful when performed without the patient being given anesthesia, said Dr. Gerald Cherayil, who attempted all of the versions reported in this retrospective study.
Sixteen of the patients in whom the procedure failed opted to try it again after receiving spinal anesthesia or epidural anesthesia, he said in a poster presentation given at the annual meeting of the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology.
