[Histamine.sub.2] blockers are ineffective when used regularly with a proton pump inhibitor to control nocturnal acid breakthroughs in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease, Dr. Joel E. Richter said at a gastroenterology update sponsored by the Cleveland Clinic Florida.
A better approach may be to add an [H.sub.2] blocker only as needed, said Dr. Richter, chairman of the department of gastroenterology at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.
Using [H.sub.2] blockers regularly for nocturnal acid breakthroughs became more commonplace after a small study showed that patients in a laboratory setting, who were being successfully treated with a proton pump inhibitor, had a significant improvement in their nighttime gastroesophageal reflux disease symptoms after one night on an [H.sub.2] blocker taken at bedtime.
